This fandom produces a lot of awesome fan art. I really should read those books.
The writing of the first one is not great, but I think that’s pretty normal for the start of a series (HP1 was written poorly, but the story was good, for example); I think there’s a natural stiltedness in starting a series just because you don’t have the flow, yet. Also, don’t let the fact that Harry is a chauvinist throw you off. I see so many people read the books, think this is a celebrated fact, throw the books against the wall and flounce. Harry treating women like delicate flowers is not something to aspire to and Butcher knows it. It’s mainly used as yet another excuse to kick Harry’s teeth in repeatedly, which I approve of, despite the fact that I’m madly in love with him.
Harry’s need to protect women is often trumped by women (or at least Things Shaped as Women) who dont need him and often save him. The Dresdenverse is full of powerful female(ish) characters.
